Software-Defined Data Centres
Over a decade ago, we made the first step towards software-defined data centres by virtualizing server resources. We continue that journey by virtualizing storage and networks.
The fastest growing segments of software-defined data centres are Software Defined Storage (SDS) and Software Defined Networks (SDN). Automation and orchestration systems are another important component of a software-defined data centre. These systems enable you to manage all components from a single point using unified tools and modern communication standards (REST API).
Hyper Converged Systems
The result of using software-defined solutions is hyper-converged infrastructure that use a multitude of industry-standard servers to replace highly specialized hardware (e.g. traditional storage systems).
Hyper-converged infrastructure integrates computing, networking and storage functions in a single physical component, also called data centre in a box. This approach can result in improved resource utilization and simplified system management. Advanced solutions also include data compression, deduplication and automated data smoothing as well as network traffic optimization when replicating data between data centres. We offer servers that are preconfigured as hyper-converged infrastructure or we build them using general purpose servers and software that enables hyper-convergence.
Generic Servers and Server Appliances
In addition to general purpose servers, there are server appliances for specific tasks, the most popular of which are data processing servers.
Servers are again gaining in prominence in data centres. General purpose servers are becoming a primary vehicle for virtualization as well as hyper-converged infrastructure that can be created using the required storage capacities. Server appliances are designed as predefined engineered systems for processing databases such as SAP HANA or Oracle Exadata. While there is increased focus on the x86 platform, other processor architectures continue to be an important segment for UNIX-based servers.
As the technology advances and new standards emerge (e.g. NVMe over Fibre Channel), the range of available storage solutions is growing to offer a broader range of possible solutions.
Storage systems continue to be at the heart of any data centre. You need to select the right technology solution to ensure the best price-performance ratio: Flash storage systems are becoming increasingly accessible, while the traditional hybrid storage systems based on physical disks still have their place in data centres because of their low price. As the amount of data grows, protocols, such as block-storage SAN and file-storage NAS systems, are increasingly complemented by object storage systems. Storage systems can be virtualized to provide unified management or they can be deployed as software-defined storage. Systems can be replicated between multiple data centres regardless of their location.
Data Protection and Archiving
Data is your asset. Data protection while ensuring compliance and achieving RPO/RTO are the areas on which your business is increasingly dependent.
Throughout the data lifecycle, you need to carry out relevant processes that are supported with various technology solutions. When planning a solution, you must select the components that best support these processes. These can be Purpose-Built Backup Appliances or Virtual Tape Libraries, Physical Tape Libraries or traditional or object-level archival systems. As we design our solutions, we embed relevant software and mechanisms to mitigate disaster risk (e.g. loss of a data centre) and criminal activity risks (e.g. cryptoviruses). One of the more demanding stages of upgrading a storage environment is the migration of data from legacy to new equipment.
Business continuity is an area that we have been focusing on for decades. Throughout that time, it hasn’t lost its importance; instead, it is becoming increasingly vital.
ISO 22301 is very clear about the definition of business continuity: it’s the capability of an organization to continue the delivery of products or services at acceptable predefined levels following disruptive incident. In our work, we rely on a result-oriented approach. We either prepare a new plan or help you optimize your existing business continuity plans and support you as you carry out drill practices once or twice a year. Our main goals are the successful test of a business continuity plan and reducing risk exposure.
